The Renault Espace is the car that started the MPV market back in 1984. Now pushing 25 years in age, Renault are giving the 2002 model a facelift in order to keep it fresh and relevant.
The granny of people carriers now has a set of LED running lights, newly redesigned headlights and some resharpened lines in order to push back the years. Not much else could be done for aging but practical French MPV. Interior changes are not much to write home about either, but the popular TomTom SatNav system now comes as standard.
The Espace and Grand Espace have been fitted with tweaked engines that run in accord with Euro 5 emission standards. The 2.0-liter dCI now produces 150 hp (111.86 kW) of power and emits just 170 grams per kilometer of CO2. UK mpg figures for this engine stand at 43.5 (5.47 l/100 km on the combined cycle). The same displacement of diesel engine can also produce 175 hp (130.50 kW) in the Espace, giving out 189 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
UK prices for the facelift are between £24,495 (EUR 28,299 or $39,293) for the 2.0 dCi 150 PAF model and £28,495 (EUR32,922 or $45,710) for a Grand Espace Dynamique TomTom with an automatic gear box.
This is a facelift of the forth generation of Espace. The MPV was designed to be 90% recyclable. In addition to that, a lot of its panels are made from light-weight materials in order to reduce fuel consumption. The car also scored a remarkable five NCAP stars for adult occupant safety and two out of four for pedestrian safety.
