2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Reaches the US

Next week, the American luxury-SUV market will get a new player, as the latest from the Porsche labs in Germany, the Cayenne S Hybrid, is getting ready to make its big entrance. The model will join the existing line-up of Porsche vehicles with prices starting from $68,675, including a $975 shipping charge.

The model comes equipped with a supercharged 3.0l V6 internal combustion engine, paired to an electric motor. The two units are capable of delivering a combined power output of 380 horsepower (333 of them come from the internal combustion engine alone). The two drive units in the Cayenne S Hybrid are connected by a decoupling clutch, while the V6 engine is mated to a new eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission.

The hybrid system on this Cayenne allows the car to achieve an EPA estimated 21 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. This was achievable because the model uses a 288-volt nickel metal-hydride (NiMh) battery fitted beneath the luggage compartment and regenerative braking,

The Cayenne S Hybrid's fuel consumption figure does not hurt the performances, which translate into a naught to sixty acceleration of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph.

The Cayenne S Hybrid is the perfect embodiment of Porsche goal of offering a hybrid version of every of its models in the near future. The next model line to come with such a vehicle is the Panamera, which will receive the technology next year.

The goal of the German manufacturer is to reduce its CO2 emissions to 216 grams per kilometer from the current average of 255 g/km.
