As the German carmaker already announced, the 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder is making its world debut at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show these days. The lightest Porsche on the market will begin sales in the US next February, with prices starting from $61,200.
"The new Boxster Spyder looks distinctly different from its Boxster siblings," Klaus Berning, Porsche's executive board member responsible for worldwide sales and marketing said during a press conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
"Our designers borrowed from the rich history of our mid-engine sports and race cars of the '50s, but under the skin it has our most advanced technology so that its performance matches the Spyder's looks, making it the quintessential purist Porsche."
The new Spyder, powered by a 3.4l six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection, develops 320 horsepower, a bit more than the Boxster S. Only 10 hp separate the two, yet the difference in weight (the Spyder is 176 pounds lighter) makes all the difference.
The Spyder provides naught to sixty acceleration time in 4.6 seconds, and can reach as much as 166 mph with the roof open. Porsche says these figures are for the version equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and the Sports Chrono Package, while using Launch Control.
"Fundamentally, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder and RS 60 of the Fifties and Sixties, all sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept. Low weight and supreme agility combine to provide outstanding driving pleasure," Porsche says.
