The wait for the second variant of Opel's new interpretation of the Astra model is over, as the German carmaker released details and photos of the Sports Tourer, a compact wagon aimed to at least match the success of the hatchback.

UPDATED WITH VIDEO BELOW

The Sports Tourer will be made available with no less than eight diesel and gasoline engines, with outputs ranging in between 95 and 180 hp. Aside for the engines already featured on the hatchback sibling, Opel's station wagon will get one new unit, as well as new engine-transmission combination.

The novelty under Astra's hood is the 1.4l turbo gasoline unit, which develops 120 hp, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. For the 140 hp version of the same engine, a six-speed automatic transmission has also been made available.

One of the biggest novelties in the Astra lineup will be the introduction of a start/stop technology, with the first use of the system to be the 1.3l CDTI ecoFLEX engine.

With the Sports Tourer accounting for 25 percent of all Astra sales in Europe, the carmaker had to build the new Sports Tourer as user-friendly as possible. To that end, Opel has developed a new FlexFold Rear Seat system to allow a 60/40 split-fold for the rear seats, a first in its segment. Using the FlexFold system allows for cargo load length to be raised to 1835 mm, 28 mm more than in the current Astra wagon and provides a loading volume of in between 500 and 1550 liters. A new FlexFix system for carrying bikes will also be featured in the wagon.

As for gadgets and technologies, the new Sports Tourer comes equipped with AFL+ adaptive forward lighting, Opel Eye front view camera system and the safety systems already seen on the hatchback Astra.

The 2011 Opel Astra Sports Tourer will be making its public debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show later this fall.
