General Motors has lifted the veil of what should be one of the most important model in its global lineup - the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. Despite the fact that its just a regular four-door sedan, the mid-size model comes off as quite the looker, with its bold grille, sculpted front and and double exhausts.
The sedan, which will become available in nearly 100 countries around the world and will be manufactured at a number of facilities, including in China, has been redesigned from the ground up with a sporty exterior that was inspired by the most recent Chevy models, such as the Cruze and the Camaro. The North American version will be manufactured at the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, and at the Hamtramck factory in Detroit.
“The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette, to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan segment,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director for GM exterior design.
The interior has also been reworked, with mode fluid lines and a prominent instrument panel incorporating a pair of Camaro-like gauges set in squared-off housings, and a new top-hinged, flat panel display on the center console that is hinged, revealing a six-inch-deep hidden and illuminated storage compartment for your iPhone or other such devices.
The North American version of the car will be offered with an all-new 2.5-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine with direct-injection, linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. It is estimated that the car will produce about 190 horsepower, which is comparable with the output of V6 units of the past.
In North American spec, the 2013 Malibu comes in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, with a choice of 10 exterior shades and four interior colors. The model we are showing you here is the range-topping LTZ. Production and sales are scheduled to start in the first quarter of next year.
