Japanese manufacturer Toyota, cornered by the offensive unleashed by Nissan and Chevrolet with their electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, respectively, decided it's time to fight back and use as its main weapon the Prius hybrid.

Confirming previous information that the Prius model will become a Prius line of cars, the carmaker unveiled today at the North American International Auto Show two Prius models, the v and the c concept, alongside the plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle.

The Prius v (which stands according to Toyota for versatility) is built using the current generation Prius platform and Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, providing the driver with a choice between four driving modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV.

Since performances are expected to be somewhat similar to those offered by the regular Prius, Toyota decided to bet it all on the infotainment technologies put into the car. The Prius v is perhaps one of the best equipped models when it comes to high tech gadgets for safety, comfort and infotainment.

Starting with the Toyota’s Star Safety System (Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist and ending with the Toyota Entune multimedia system (allowing access to iheartradio’s 750+ stations, Pandora’s personalized music, the driver’s personal songs from portable media players and iPods), the Prius v is more of a crowd pleasing experiment than a car built to impress.

The good news is that the car will make it into production later this year, so current Prius owners can now safely consider sticking with the brand and nameplate when the time comes to change the old one.
