2011 Infiniti M, Confirmed Virtual Unveiling at Pebble Beach

Japanese manufacturer Nissan confirmed today the official unveiling of the 2011 Infiniti M will take place on August 14, at the 59th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The unveiling itself will be an event of its own, as Nissan will use the so-called virtual video mapping technology to present the new Infiniti. That means the car won't be there per se, but only as a computer-generated rendering.

To set up the event, Nissan partnered with RTT USA and Klip Collective. Using the technologies at their disposal, the two companies "created an immersive, three-dimensional video installation to showcase the new Infiniti."

Video projectors cover four 15-foot (4.5 meters) walls, while sound will be provided via a 5.1 sound system. The rendering will be projected on a 3D foam model using topographical site-specific video projection imaging to create an "immersive experience that mimics the vehicle’s physical presence."

Nissan warns there will be no physical vehicle on site, but only an entirely computer-generated image. Still, this doesn't stop the manufacturer in taking pride of being "the first automobile company to unveil a vehicle using this type of technology."

"The car will look like it is actually there. It will be full-size, and, if you didn't know it was a virtual mapping, you would think it was the real thing from a distance. It gives consumers a preview of the vehicle in advance of its December debut, before any actual vehicles have been built," Kyle Bazemore, Infiniti senior manager of product communications said.

If you have no chance on earth to get to the Pebble Beach event and witness the event first hand, Nissan provides a live feed to the show. So, all you tech heads who enjoy the technology, or all you Infiniti fans who enjoy the car, follow this link and watch the live unveiling of the yet non-existent car.
