The regular Sonata is offered in the US with Hyundai’s new Theta II 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine and in-house six-speed automatic transmission, developing 198 horsepower standard and 200 horsepower on the SE trim. This allows the car to deliver a fuel economy of 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway, which Hyundai says is the best in its class.
Taking into account these figures, the Turbo configuration will surely bring an output of 200+ horsepower but, once again, more details are likely to be released closer to the official launch date at the NY show. The 2010 New York Auto Show runs from April 2 through April 11, with two press days on March 31 and April 1.
"With the 2011 Sonata, our focus was a no-compromise engineering approach that would allow Sonata owners to have their cake, and eat it too. That focus led to a set of attributes that have not been seen in the midsize car category – attributes such as 35 mpg and 200 horsepower, bold design and an EPA Large Car interior, world-class quality and a class-leading value position," John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO, said in a release earlier this month when announcing pricing for the Sonata.
"At Hyundai, we're big fans of resetting conventional wisdom, and we think we may have done it here with the 2011 Sonata."
