The decision made by WTCC promoter Marcello Lotti was based on the prospect of seeing the FIA WTCC field get together with the one in the Brazilian V8 Stock Car series during the same weekend. Consequently, the Brazilian racing fans will get to enjoy plenty of action throughout the weekend, leading to fuller grandstands.
“The race will be at Interlagos because we have reached a deal with the Brazilian Stock Car series to run on the same weekend,” said Lotti, according to Autosport. “I spoke with the promoter of Stock Cars, and they will do their race on the Sunday morning, and we will keep our standard timetable. It's very exciting.”
“Also, the promoter is considering opening an S2000 championship in Brazil with the same rules as the WTCC, so it is a nice co-operation,” added Lotti about the event which is scheduled to kick off the 2011 WTCC action on March 18-20.
Following the race in Brazil, the FIA WTCC field will head back to Europe, despite the provisional 2011 schedule, according to which Argentina was to host the second round of the season. In early November, the same Lotti confirmed that the series will switch to Zolder for the 2nd round of the 2011 calendar, as the Argentine authorities did not provide the necessary assurances that they can host a race at Buenos Aires.
“Our plan to race in Argentina reached a deadlock because the event promoter and the local government were not in a position to grant the work that needed to be done to re-homologate the Buenos Aires circuit in time for the event. Therefore we have jointly decided to put off the championship’s first visit to Argentina until all the issues are solved and we will work together to make this happen in the near future,” said Lotti at the time.
