One year of hard work is about to be repaid for some of the manufacturers on the automotive scene, as the nominees for the 2011 European Car of the Year awards have been announced by the organizers of the annual event.
The first batch of nominees is 35 nameplates long, with models coming from all over Europe. The most models on the list belong to Citroen (3 models) and Nissan (also 3 names). For the first time, a Romanian vehicle has entered the competition: the Duster. Also as a premiere, an electric vehicle made the list, the Nissan Leaf.
According to the rules which allow any given model to be featured on the coveted list, the car has to be on sale within the 12 months leading up to nominations (meaning it had to be launched in 2010) and sell at least 5,000 units on the European market.
The award will be handed after the cars are reviewed by a panel of journalists from Italy, UK, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Sweden.
