2011 Chevrolet Volt Is Virtually Sold Out

While automakers have started releasing their sales statements for the month of July, General Motors goes even further with the details. Aside from the usual units and figures, the American auto giant also revealed the its popular electric car, the Volt is “virtually sold out” of the outgoing 2011 model year, as spokeswoman Michelle Bunker was quoted as saying by Free Press.

Of the 4,488 Volts built at Detroit-Hamtramck, about 100 remain unclaimed, she said, adding that the rest are reserved for dealer demos.

The plant, which is undergoing a changeover for the 2012 model year, has recently went through several upgrades, some of them including expanded capacity. GM is increasing production of the Volt to build a total of 16,000 this year and 60,000 next year, with some badged as the European Opel Ampera. In fact, CEO Dan Akerson has said GM may eventually build more than 100,0000 a year.

We’ll remind you that prices for the 2012 Chevrolet Volt start at $39,995 but with a full federal income tax credit (which range from $0 to $7,500), the Volt can cost a total of $32,495.

The car is powered by an electric system that develops 149-hp and a maximum torque of 273 lb-ft, which enables it to sprint from 0-60 mph in about 9 seconds, hitting a top speed of 100 mph. The battery can be re-charged by plugging into a household outlet and takes 4 hours to recharge on 240 volts, and about 10-12 hours on a standard 120-volt outlet.
