2011 Chevrolet Cruze Unveiled

The wait for what GM hopes to be at the center of its revival line-up for 2010 is finally over, as the American carmaker pulled the wraps off their 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. The car, yet to be presented in the flesh (this will happen on December 2, at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show), promises to come with fuel efficient engines, as well as several segment leading features.

Cruze is already a hit across Europe and Asia; and now, it’s coming to America to challenge the status quo,” Brent Dewar, Chevrolet Global brand vice president said in a release. “Along with the Volt electric vehicle, Cruze is the latest tangible example of how Chevrolet is working on exciting products that range from gas-friendly to gas-free.

To propel the car, GM turned to only two engines, a four cylinder 1.8l DOHC and a four-cylinder 1.4l turbocharged DOHC. The former produces 136 hp at 6,300 rpm and 167 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm, with the fuel consumption rating yet to be determined.

The smaller, turbocharged unit, develops 138 hp at 4,900 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1,850 rpm. For both engines, GM provides a six speed manual transmission, with a 6-speed Hydra-Matic transmission also available.

The Cruze will come equipped with the following:

  • ten standard air bags (frontal, side-impact, roof rail head curtain, rear seat side air bags and knee air bags)
  • electronic stability control with rollover sensing
  • Bluetooth, USB connectivity and navigation system
  • XM Satellite Radio and OnStar
  • MacPherson strut front suspension and Watts Z-link rear suspension
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes

The new Cruze will go on sale in the US in the third quarter of 2010, as already announced. Pricing information has not yet been released.
