2011 Buick Regal to Be Built in Canada

General Motors announced that production of the 2011 Buick Regal will start in the first quarter of 2011 at the Oshawa Car Assembly plant. As you might know, the Regal is based on the Opel Insignia, Europe’s Car of the Year in 2009, so the first Buicks to arrive in the United States in 2010 will be assembled alongside the Insignia in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

"The new Regal gives Buick a modern performance sedan and its production here in Oshawa is terrific news for our employees, the CAW, dealers and suppliers," says Arturo Elias, president, General Motors of Canada. "Combining Buick's top position in the industry in terms of brand quality with the Oshawa Car Plant's long-standing reputation for top quality assembly means customers' highest expectations will be met with this midsize sport sedan."

Buick Regal will join the Chevrolet Camaro, the Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain at the Oshawa Car Plant as part of an agreement with the Canadian Government. General Motors of Canada is located in Oshawa, Ontario and has 9,000 employees. The plant has been running maximum overtime since June 2009, thanks to the high demand for the Chevrolet Camaro.

In the future, GM plans to invest $C90 million in CAMI Automotive, a factory in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada owned together with Suzuki. This measure is meant to add an additional 40,000 units of capacity to current production. While Suzuki stopped production in Canada, GM of Canada still manufactures here vehicles and vehicle powertrains.
