Just as “the brand with the four rings” promised, the new Audi A8 was introduced yesterday in Miami and is expected to arrive in US dealerships in late 2010. Obviously, there are plenty of details regarding the car but let’s take them one by one.

First of all, the car is full with top-notch technology, no matter if we’re referring to the aluminum body structure, the further improved MMI operating system, the new driver assistance systems or the LED headlights. In case this isn’t enough to satisfy you tech guys, Audi also implemented a brand new night vision system to help detect pedestrians plus the Audi pre-sense safety system and a speed limit display.

The petrol engine is the already-popular 4.2-liter FSI V8 unit that now develops an output of 372 horsepower and 445 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. Translate this into performance figures and you get a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds and an electronically-limited maximum speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Audi says the engine is 15 percent more efficient as compared to its predecessors, mostly to a number of improvements, including the use of the aluminum chassis that reduces the overall weight of the car. The other three engine choices are a new 4.2-liter V8 TDI, delivering 350 HP and 800 Nm (590 lb ft), and a 3.0 V6 TDI that comes in two power versions: 204 HP and 250 HP.

The powerplants are mated to an 8-speed tiptronic transmission, also contributing to fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Audi’s quattro permanent all- wheel is also available, while a dynamic sport differential can be ordered as an option.

The German brand says the new A8 is one of the most advanced models in its class when it comes to sporty features. The A8 will compete with Mercedes S-Klasse and BMW 7 Series, while Lexus LS and Jaguar XJ are considered to be secondary competitors.

"The new Audi A8 is the sportiest sedan in its segment,"
says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG. "It combines numerous functions in a new and intelligent way. And it's unmatched in the stylistic elements and impression of the interior."

Other feature highlights include a Bang & Olufsen Advanced sound system (optional, BOSE Surround Sound is standard), 19 speakers, 19 channels and more than 1400 watts of B&O-patented ICE-Power output, Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, Night vision assistant with pedestrian detection highlighting, Audi lane assist, Audi side assist, ESP stability control with electronic all-wheel-drive torque vectoring, Audi braking guard, automatic emergency braking and reversible belt tensioners.

Audi says that a long-wheelbase version of the A8 will be rolled out in 2010, while a hybrid edition might also join the range in the near future. Pricing information will be provided in the beginning of 2010.
