2010 SEMA: Four Wheeler Magazine's Toyota 4Runner Backcountry

With the 2010 SEMA Show kicking off today, car manufacturers and tuners alike are cramming to show off whatever they brought to the exhibition and believe us, this is no vanity fair.

Four Wheeler Magazine's Project Toyota Backcountry makes its first public appearance in style, looking like it could overcome any off-road obstacle, all while maintaining comfort for daily driver use, if desired.

The 4Runner has been lifted approximately 2.5 inches (about 6 cm) thanks to the Old Manu Emu (OME) suspension system. Heavy-duty springs and OME NitroCharger Sport shocks provide higher ground clearance and increased load carrying ability. Modified suspension alone wouldn't do much good without P285/70R17 Falken WildPeak A/T tires fitted to 17x8 Teflon-coated ATX Mojave wheels. Altogether, the 4Runner Backcountry is 3 inches taller than a regular 4Runner.

Keeping to the backcountry theme the 4Runner received an ARB front Air Locker to prevent it from becoming stranded. If in whatever manner or way it does manage to get stuck, there's a Warn XD9000 winch giving the 4Runner the ability to pull itself out of a sticky situation.

Mounted to the roof is a complete accommodation solution in the shape of the ARB Steel Touring Style Roof Rack on top of which the ARB Series III Simpson Rooftop Tent and ARB Awning 2000 are mounted. Also mounted on the roof rack are four KC HiLiTES 5x7 front facing and two 2x6 rear facing lights.

The factory spare tire has been moved from underneath the vehicle to the back, making room for a 13-gallon (about 50 liters) water tank that, together with a 12V electric water pump, makes a great shower.

Altogether, the 4Runner Backcountry is a perfect car for the outdoor recreational enthusiast, seeking less traveled roads and isolated camping sites.
