German manufacturer Porsche today announced the world debut of the 911 GT3 Cup racing car at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show in September. The new edition of the "world's most successful racing car," as Porsche calls it, is the first to be based on the 911 GT3 RS.
More lightweight than the RS version, the GT3 Cup features a 44 mm wider body than the previous Cup at the rear, to make it able to accommodate larger wheels. Compared to the previous version, the new Cup has an engine displacement increased by 0.2l, providing an additional 30 bhp.
That means the 3.8l six-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, now develops 450 bhp at 8,500 rpm.
Harnessing that power calls for the use of Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), also available in the street-legal Porsches. On the GT3 Cup though, the brakes help reduce the weight of the car by 20 kg (44 pounds).
To make the racing driver's life easier, Porsche provides the six buttons needed to control the Info display directly on the steering wheel. The steering wheel can be adjusted not only fore-and-aft, but also for height, as with regular production cars.
The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is available in only one color, Carrara White, and will be delivered starting the end of October. For the next season, it will race in no less than seven competitions, including Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, Porsche Carrera Cups and GT3 Cup Challenges.
Starting price for the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is set at 149,850 euros, VAT not included.
