2010 Polo Gets Small Car of the Year Award in Scotland

Volkswagen has some celebrating to do because the new Volkswagen Polo won the Small Car of the Year at the Scottish Car of the Year awards. The award was presented during a ceremony held in St Andrews.

In presenting the award, the new Polo was praised by the Scottish judges who said: “The Polo’s mix of quality and competitive pricing plus a wide range of trim and engine options ensured its place on pole position. If only everything in life was as reliable as our 2009 champion.

The new Polo is highly appreciated in Scotland. Since its launch in October, there were more than 8,000 orders, 86 percent more than the projected volume. The interest for the Polo will most likely continue next year, especially with the launch of the BlueMotion model which emits just 90g of CO2 per kilometer.

To win this award is a tremendous honor. The Scottish market is incredibly important to us and the Polo accounts for nearly a third of all Volkswagens sold in Scotland. We’re looking forward to even greater success in 2010,” said Chris Craft, Director of Volkswagen UK.

The Polo was introduced in 1975 as Volkswagen's second front wheel drive hatchback model, fitting into the range beneath the Golf, which had been launched the previous year.

It remained the smallest model in the Volkswagen range until 1998, when the Volkswagen Lupo was introduced. The Polo is still Volkswagen's second smallest model, larger than the Fox and smaller than the Golf. The new Polo is mechanically very similar to the Seat Ibiza Mk4 and the upcoming Audi A1.
