It was only a matter of time until the e-tron line of electric vehicles planned by German manufacturer Audi decided it's time to expand. Having shown the world several interpretations of the e-tron at various auto shows, Audi brought to the 2010 Paris Auto Show the Spyder version of the electric car.

The Spyder e-tron comes however not as a pure electric vehicle, but as a plug-in hybrid one, previewing perhaps the direction in which the e-tron division of the carmaker will be heading with its future products.

The hybrid drive train of the car comprises a 300 hp twin-turbo V6 TDI powering the rear axle (the first use of a new generation of the engine) and two electric motors with a total output of 64 kw (88 hp) feeding power to the front one. In all, the two systems make for a total torque output of over 1,000 Nm.

The combination between the diesel engine and the electric motors and batteries make the car capable of reaching a range of more than 1,000 km (621 miles). This is possible because the otherwise big engine eats up only 2.2l of fuel every 100 km (106 mpg).

The combination chosen by Audi provides the vehicle with an acceleration time of 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Visually, the car has been designed to be reminiscent of the motorsports world. Built with the use of the Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology, the body of the car is a hybrid in itself, combining aluminum with carbon fiber.
