2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG: Official Details and Photos

After some photos of the latest model in Mercedes Benz’s range got leaked yesterday, the German carmaker officially unveiled the 2010 SLS AMG today, releasing a whole gallery of the new Gullwing, including a glimpse of the car’s interior. As we said, following its introduction at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the car is due to enter production in spring 2010 and sell for 177,310 euros. If we have already offered you a short overview of the car’s performance and design features in our previous report, there are still some other characteristics left to be detailed, including safety and fuel consumption. The car’s passive safety is ensured by the standard-fit three-point seat belts, belt tensioners, belt force limiters and eight airbags: two adaptive airbags and a kneebag are available for the driver and passenger. Two sidebags integrated into the seats and two separate windowbags that deploy from the door waistline are also available. According to the official data released by the manufacturer, the SLS AMG has a combined fuel consumption of 13.2l/100km (17.8 mpg), thanks to its friction-optimised twin-wire-arc-sprayed coating on the cylinder walls as well as the on-demand, map-optimised oil supply and intelligent generator management. A new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission takes care of power transfer. The dual-clutch transmission offers the driver a choice of four different driving modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) or "M" (Manual) along with a RACESTART function. The color range for the new Gullwing includes nine exclusive paint finishes, highlighted by the AMG ALU-BEAM silver paintwork, which is said to be making the car shine like liquid metal. Moreover, the exterior design strikes thanks to the LED technology and several elements inspired by motor racing. The spoiler integrated in the boot lid is automatically deployed from a speed of 120 km/h to ensure optimum stability at high speeds, the official report stated. At a short glimpse, the interior is just as rumored, revealing an aircraft construction design theme of the dashboard and center console. The constructor made use of nappa leather, solid metal and (optional) genuine carbon-fibre facings, with five different leather colours available: black, classic red, sand, porcelain and light brown. And just to tease you a little bit... try imagining how would you feel sitting in those sports seats with magnesium backrests and two-zone seat cushions, behind the performance leather steering wheel in a three-spoke design with a flattened lower section, shift paddles and a metal insert... autoevolution will be attending the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions.
