2010 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG Detailed

Having the success of the new E-Klasse almost ensured, giving the large numbers of visitors (350,000) who attended the German premiere over the weekend, the German manufacturer felt at ease to release the details of the new E63 AMG version of the E-Klasse.

Using a AMG 6.2l engine that develops 518 horsepower (11 HP more than the previous version) and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, the E63 accelerates from standstill to 60 mph (100 km/hour) in just 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/hour). Unfortunately, the top speed of the car is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/hour).

The engine is matted to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission that replaces the conventional torque converter through the use of a multi-disc wet start-up clutch. In conjunction with the four individual driving modes, rev-matched shifts and RACE START function, the new transmission provides better response and contributes to the fuel economy (12 percent lower than the previous version).

The transmission is equipped with four driving modes: C (Controlled Efficiency), S (Sport), S+ (Sport plus) and M (Manual), which can be selected using a rotary electronic switch in the AMG Drive Unit.

Safety wise, the E63 AMG uses a newly developed powersteering (22 percent more direct than in the standard production models) and individual 3-stage ESP. The latter allows drivers to choose between "ESP ON", "ESP SPORT" and "ESP OFF", with the active mode shown in the central display of the instrument cluster.

Visually, wider fenders bearing "6.3 AMG" lettering, a new front apron, side skirts and rear apron make for an aggressive looking Mercedes E-Klasse. 18 inch light-alloy wheels shoed in tires sized of 255/40 R 18 at the front and 285/35 R 18 at the rear further emphasize the sports sedan look.

For the interior, standard equipment includes leather upholstery in three different colors, the AMG instrument cluster with an AMG main menu, door entry sills with AMG lettering and a sports pedal cluster, both in brushed stainless steel.

Sales of the 2010 E63 AMG will begin in the United States in November 2009.
