2010 Lexus RX Gets IIHS Top Safety Pick

The 2010 Lexus RX has just received the top safety pick in the latest IIHS crash test, getting good performance in front, side and rear tests. In order to be be eligible for the top rating, a vehicle must feature electronic stability control and receive good ratings after front, side and rear tests.

"The Lexus RX was redesigned for the 2010 model year. Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Toyota as part of frontal crash test verification.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail grab handle above the driver door.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity,"
IIHS said in a release.

The tested RX 350 featured front and rear head curtain airbags, as well as front and rear seat-mounted torso airbags. There are several other safety features across the range, including electronic stability control, antilock brakes, daytime running lights, driver and passenger knee airbags and rollover sensor.

The RX 350 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 which helps it achieve EPA ratings of 18 mpg in city and 24 mpg in highway. It develops a maximum power of 275 hp (compared to 270 on the previous generation) combined with 256 lb-ft of torque.

Other features highlights include 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (19-inch wheels come as optional), SmartAccess keyless-entry system, Hard Disc Drive (HDD) navigation system, USB inputs, Bluetooth Audio wireless connectivity and standard XM satellite radio capability.
