The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2010 Lexus HS 250h a 5-star rating after subjecting what Toyota calls the "world’s first dedicated luxury hybrid" to its series of crash tests. The hybrid scored great in both front impact for the driver and right front passenger positions and side impact for the driver and left rear passenger.
NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) put the Lexus through its paces and tested its performances in crashes and rollovers alike. Lexus says that this achievement is a result of the HS 250h's body structure of the which protects the driver and passengers.
The body of the car features high-tension steel components in the body itself, the doors and several other areas.
The hybrid is powered by Lexus’ first four-cylinder gas engine, working in conjunction with a hybrid system. Together, they develop a total of 187 horsepower, 147 of them from the regular powerplant alone.
The two-motor hybrid system, taken separately, develops 141 horsepower but, to make things clear, you should know that the two power units cannot be used simultaneous at their peak power. The second motor in the hybrid system serves as both engine starter and generator to charge the hybrid battery pack.
It features four different driving modes, Power, Normal, Eco and EV. The HS 250h has an EPA estimated 35 mpg (6.7l/100km) in combined cycle. When used in the Eco mode, the Lexus is 20 percent more fuel efficient than the fuel-efficient model currently in the Lexus lineup.
The car comes in either standard or Premium versions in the US and is priced at $34,200 and $36,970, respectively.
