2010 Ford Escape Gets Active Park Assist, Safety Technologies

Ford Escape, the SUV which has the best crash test ratings of the vehicles in its class, will get yet more safety upgrades, as the American manufacturer will add five new features that improve safety, including an automatic parallel parking system.

Ford will fit the new Escape with MyKey teen safety technology, allowing the driver to program a key that can limit the vehicle's top speed and audio volume. It encourages safety belt usage and provides earlier low-fuel warnings.

The SYNC with Traffic real-time information system will make the Escape one of the first vehicles to use it. The new services provided by the system come in all shapes and sizes, starting with personalized traffic reports, precise turn-by-turn driving directions and up-to-date information including business listings, news, sports, and even weather.

The 2010 Escape will be first North American SUV to offer Active Park Assist. The system uses an ultrasonic sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking. It then calculates the optimal steering angle and steers the vehicle into a parking spot.

The other two extra safety features that come with the Escape are meant to make the driver more aware to the surrounding traffic. Both the Integrated Spotter Mirror and the Rear View Camera System allow for a better driver response to traffic conditions.

"The Ford Escape is one of few vehicles that earned both full 5-star crash ratings and a 'Top Safety Pick' in the small SUV segment. These new technologies will help to take the new Escape to the next level of safety and driver satisfaction," Susan Cischke, Ford's group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering said.

Ford's own market research reveals that 90 percent of Escape buyers chose this model over other cars or brands based on these safety features. If you want to become one of them, you can find the Escape in showrooms starting this summer.
