2010 Chevrolet New Sail Hatchback Introduced in Beijing

At the beginning of the year, General Motors unveiled in China the 2010 Chevrolet New Sail Sedan, the first passenger vehicle developed in China by a joint venture (it was created together with the carmaker’s Chinese partner, Shanghai Auto).

Now GM is using the Beijing Auto Show to expand the New Sail range, as it has introduced the hatchback version of the vehicle, together with an electronic manual transmission (EMT).

The Chevrolet New Sail has set a new standard for its segment, raising the bar for safety, convenience, quality and overall value for money since its launch in January,” said Shanghai GM President Ding Lei. “The addition of a hatchback and the EMT transmission will give consumers a greater choice in the domestic small car segment.

The Chevrolet New Sail hatchback features the Boxy design concept, which allows it to offer a generous interior space for its class: the car offers a rear seat headroom of 965 mm and a luggage area volume of up to 1,215 liters. The vehicle’s rear seats can be folded in a 4/6 configuration of completely, offering a flat floor. In addition to that, the vehicle’s hatch has a square shape, offering excellent loading/unloading access.

The new five speed EMT gearbox, which has been developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive in collaboration with Marelli offers a 15 percent improved fuel economy, compared to traditional torque converter automatic transmissions.

The hatchback version of the New Sail shares its engine range with the sedan (a 1.2 liter and a 1.4 liter unit are offered) and meets the same safety standards, achieving a four-star rating in China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) testing.

The New Sail hatchback and the EMT transmission will be introduced to the Chinese market in June.
