2010 BMW 5 Series Sedan Official Details and Photos

Following several months of showing you spyshots and keeping you up to date with the latest rumors, it is now time to present you the official details and photos of the new 5er, as German carmaker BMW released late last night full specs for the car.

The new 5 Series will be powered by a range of one eight-cylinder and three six-cylinder petrol engines, as well as by two six-cylinder diesel powerplants. BMW also offers a four-cylinder turbodiesel, fitted on the 520d and developing 184 hp.

The top of the range engine, fitted on the 550i is a V8 unit which uses BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection. Maximum output for this beast stands at no less than 407 hp.

The new 5 Series version will be, 550i (407 hp), 535i (306 hp), 528i (258 hp), 523i (204 hp), 520d (184 hp), 530d (245 hp) and 525d (204hp). You can find the complete list of engines and their performances in the PDF attached below.

The novelties which come with the new 5 Series in terms of engineering are the use of the latest generation of straight-six diesels featuring an all-aluminum crankcase and common-rail direct injection, paired with the eight-speed automatic transmission (optional on almost all versions) and the use of the latest generation of BMW iDrive controller.

All the version of the 5 Series sedan are equipped with BMW's EfficientDynamics technologies, which include BMW’s automatic transmission, EPS Electric Power Steering, Brake Energy Regeneration, gearshift point indicator, active air flaps control, and on-demand operation of ancillary units including a detachable a/c compressor.

From the safety standpoint, BMW spared no expense and packed the 5 Series with three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all seats, frontal and side airbags, crash-activated headrests for the driver and front passenger, curtain head airbags at the side, a tire defect indicator as well as an active engine compartment lid to protect pedestrians.

All the models feature daytime running lights, foglamps, two-stage Adaptive Brake Lights and cruise control complete with a brake initiation function. Optionally, customers can go for bi-xenon dual headlights, Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution, adaptive headlight range control and bending lights, as well as an Enhanced Emergency Call function for ConnectedDrive.
