The fast approaching 2009 New York Auto Show is an opportunity for all manufactures to present the line-up of vehicles which will be showcased "in the flesh" by all of them during the event. One of them is Daimler and, amongst its range, the 2009 S Klasse will surely get a place into the spotlight, especially since the show will witness the S400 HYBRID (based on the S350), a vehicle the manufacturer names "the world's most economical petrol-engined luxury saloon". Furthermore, the new S400 is the first production vehicle to use a hybrid drive in conjunction with a lithium-ion battery.

Fuel consumption ratings for the modified 3.5l petrol engine stand at 7.9l/100 km, while CO2 emissions rate at 186g/km, the lowest figure in its class. The petrol powerplant still packs a punch, as it produces 279 horsepower, while the electric motor develops 20 horsepower and a starting torque of 160 Nm. The 3.5l engine is mated to a 7G-Tronic automatic transmission, especially tweaked for the hybrid module.

In addition, the 2009 S Klasse is comprised of no less than other eight engines, all using BlueEfficiency package (aerodynamic optimization, demand-controlled fuel pumps and the fuel-efficient gearshift program for the automatic transmission).

The S 350 CDI BlueEfficiency eats up 7.6l every hundred kilometers with 199-201g of CO2 released every kilometer, thanks to the 3.0l diesel (also used on the S 350 CDI 4MATIC). The unit develops 235 horsepower. The second diesel powerplant is the 320 horsepower 4.0l V8, used on the S 350 CDI 4MATIC.

The larger petrol engine range is comprised of the 272 horsepower 3.5l V6 (S 350/ S 350 4MATIC), two 340 horsepower 4.7l V8 engines (S 450/S 450 4MATIC) and the 5.5l, 388 horsepower used on the S 500/S 500 4MATIC. The top of the S Klasse line, the S 600, is powered by a 517 horsepower 5.5l V12 biturbo engine (naught to sixty in 4.6 seconds). On the tuning side, the new S Klasse brings the S63 AMG (525 horsepower 6.2l V8) and the S65 AMG with a 612 horsepower 6.0l V12 engine.

Pricing for the new S Klasse star at 73,006 euros for the S350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and goes to at least 155,354 euros for the S600.
