Tucked in between the odd little Fox Body Mustang and the S197 revival of vintage allure, the New Edge iteration of the timeless pony car might not be everyone’s darling. But, somehow, it still manages to grab one’s attention—as long as there’s proper Saleen interference.
For example, one could always choose the 2004MY swan song of the fourth generation series to make the most out of the New Edge styling and keep things as modern as possible. And when upgrading to the Saleen nameplate, there’s also the added value of standing out in the SN95 crowd.

Actually, this 2004 Ford Mustang Saleen S281SC even comes with the added panache of being a rare bird among its kin. The S281 boasted a lot of performance alongside radical looks since the Mustang was properly tuned from both a design and technical standpoint. Most importantly, the GT’s stock 281ci (4.6-liter) was massaged by the aftermarket specialist from the standard 260 hp to 290 horsepower and 330 lb-ft (447 Nm).

As such, it entered a very select club: according to Mecum Auctions, there were just 521 Mustangs modified by Saleen for the 2004 model year. Even better, this unit that’s part of “The Meticulous Mustangs and More Collection” (alongside curiosities such as a Challenger SRT Hellcat) is of the S281SC variety, meaning that it also added an optional Saleen Series IV twin-screw supercharger to the mix.

With it, the power was bumped to no less than 375 hp while the production count got lowered to just 101 supercharged coupes. Ready to go under the hammer during the 34th Original Spring Classic Indy (May 14-22, Indianapolis, Indiana), this example had just two owners during its lifetime and now comes with just 15,644 miles (25,177 km) on the odometer.

We’re happy that it was enjoyed for a while and still looks pristine, and hopefully, the next owner to get VIN 04-0356 (as evidenced by the decal on the front bumper) will take the supercharged Sonic Blue/Dark Charcoal Mustang to even more road trips from now on. After all, according to the $32 to $42k estimate, it’s not like you’d lose a fortune when properly hooning this thing around.
