A 2000 horsepower Lamborghini Gallardo with a twin-turbo system had a very nasty spill during a drag race event this weekend. While trying to set a new personal record, the driver lost control of the car and ended up in the water. As you can imagine, the whole experience is cringe-worthy.
As weird as they appear, twin-turbo Gallardos are quite common, thanks to the work of specialists tuners Underground Racing. Pretty much every version of the Gallardo can be tuned to over 1,500 horsepower, but this particular model appears to be the LP-570 Superleggera, since it has a more aggressive front splitter setup. Other companies, including Dallas Performance, also offer twin-turbo kits for the V10 Italian supercar.
It's a peach of a car, but it's going to need a trip to the workshop and some tender love and care, since flooding a performance engine is never a good thing.
The upside is that the driver seem to be OK and he will live to race another day, not to mention he will have an awesome story to tell his grandkids. "Did I tell you about the time I crashed a 2000 hp supercar into a lake?"
He probably knows just how lucky he is to walk away from such a dangerous crash. The car also appears to be in good condition. That lake was more like a deep puddle filled with rain water. Had that been deeper, the twin-turbo'd Gallardo would have been scrap metal.
Update: the car was actually tuned at Heffner Performance. Fresh details and a second video released show the Gallardo was going close to 200 miles per hour (322 km/h) when it crashed at an event called WannaGOFAST in Florida.
