1999 Shelby Series I Roadster Up for Auction

The upcoming Amelia Island event on March 12 will feature the sale of one of just 249 Shelby Series I Roadsters built, RM Auctions revealed. Estimated at $90,000-$120,000, the vehicle in question (car number 217 of 249), comes with a racing-derived aluminum space-frame chassis was hand-built to racecar standards.

The car is finished in Silver Metallic and blue racing stripes, and it has covered only about 3,000 miles (4,828 km) from new. Weighing in only 2,800 pounds (1,270 kg), it reportedly offers near-perfect weight distribution.

Technical wise, the vehicle comes fitted with a 320 bhp, front-mid-mounted 4.0-liter DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine with fuel injection and GM electronic fuel and spark controls, six-speed manual gearbox in rear transaxle, four-wheel coil-over independent suspension, and ventilated four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes.

Other features include a carbon-fiber dashboard and a clear adhesive bra, which protects the front from stone chips and other minor cosmetic road damage. This Series I is offered complete with documentation including its Statement of Origin signed by Carroll Shelby, plus a letter and signed photograph from Carroll Shelby, a Series I sales brochure, a scale model and even a Shelby baseball cap.

“RM’s Amelia Island sale has earned a reputation over the years as a highlight on the annual collector car calendar,” says Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder, RM Auctions.

“Backed by a strong track record, our 2011 sale is shaping up to be another not-to-be-missed event. With an emphasis on great automotive styling from across the decades, the sale will combine a high-caliber roster of automobiles with the first-class presentation and unparalleled client service for which RM is known,” the statement further adds.
