Chevrolet’s C5 generation of the Corvette was the last to feature the quirky pop-up headlight setup. It was also the first to feature an all-new LS1 engine, but these are not exactly the most interesting facts. The honor goes to what is probably the most polarizing iteration of the series - the newly introduced (in 1998, that is) convertible version in Pace Car replica guise.
Believe it or not, if you want to make an impression among ‘Vette aficionados (though it may not always be a positive one), you cannot go wrong with such an example.

And a pristine-looking, very low-mileage unit is popping up (see what we just did there?!) this October on the red carpet of the Mecum Auctions sale in Dallas, scheduled for October 15th, 16th, and 17th at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

It has a mere 4,394 miles (7,071 km) on the odometer, and just about every important honor a Chevrolet Corvette owner could possibly want – such as the Bloomington Gold certification, or the NCRS Top Flight Award.

This one of just 1,163 units produced in 1998 is proudly wearing its distinctive Pace Car Purple shade with black, white, and (way too many) yellow touches. Even the interior is draped in the same purple / yellow combination, along with the in-your-face all-yellow alloys.

Nobody could mistake this for anything else than a commemorative Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replica due to the inscriptions on the side, but we have a feeling the new owner will be more interested in sharing with the audience the roar of the fuel injected 5.7-liter LS1 V8 engine. The latter was mated to the optional six-speed manual transmission for some purist stick shifts.

Other than that, this special edition is also a premium offering among the Corvettes of the era. As such, it is packed from the factory dual-zone AC, a Bose Hi-Fi audio system, powered steering, windows, locks, seats, and mirrors, as well as the driver memory package, and the very rare (at the time) Head-Up display tech.
