Great Scott! With this breed going under the hammer this summer it’s safe to say that Doc was right, the famous DMC-12 DeLorean did eventually travel to 2015. Sure, there’s no nuclear reactor and a flux capacitor to work the time traveling magic. No, this piece is as real as they get, and was owned by none other than the brand’s creator himself, John DeLorean.
For those who haven't heard the story, you should know that the founder of the DeLorean car was, in fact, a top manager of General Motors. The visionary entrepreneur later decided to go on his separate way and formed his own company, the DeLorean Motor Company. His dream was to produce a safe, ethical and ecologically responsible automobile. The only model that was ever produced was the two-seater sportscar, as you may very well know.

Manufactured for the American market from 1981 until 1983 in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland, the DeLorean DMC-12 may have not been the most successful model of the time, but it sure received a proper spot in the history of automotive industry. The gull-wing doors and innovative fiberglass chassis and underbody structure clearly stood out from the very beginning.

Its heavy weight and less powerful engine stopped it from winning the race against the likes of the Corvette or Porsche 911. However, whether it’s the blockbuster Back to the Future franchise that kept it alive or not, one thing is clear: it’s slowly turning into a collectible nowadays.

The unit in question is even more special than the other of its kind since it was a gift from John DeLorean to his wife, top model, and actress Cristina Ferrare, whom he married in 1973.

Priced at EUR 34,000 ($38,000), the vehicle is part of the Classic Cars auction at Auctionata to take place June 26.
