1981 BMW M1 Up for Sale for $499,000

A rare 1981 BMW M1 is now up for grabs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the ‘measly’ price of $499,000. The company that’s selling it, Global Autosports, is probably looking for a hefty profit for this rare piece of M history.

However, looking over the prices we’ve seen in the past for ever rarer models, the half a million price tag seems a bit steep. Not too long ago we found an limited-run AHG version up for grabs and that owner wanted just €229,500 for it ($312,000) even though only 10 of them were ever made.

Overall, the M1 was built between 1987 and 1981 in 453 units so it is a rare bird but the one we’re seeing here for sale is not a special edition model or anything like that.

According to the ad, it has 12,482 miles on the odometer and is in ‘excellent’ condition. By the looks of things, it seems like they aren’t lying but the price still is a bit too high.

The engine under that boot looks like the original 3.5-liter inline 6-cylinder M88 one used back in the day that developed 272 HP and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque in its standard application, thanks to six separate throttle bodies and plenty more M technology.

It was pretty advanced for those days too, introducing ABS and an early version of DSC for the first time and having the styling of a Lamborghini, something you didn’t see all that often in Munich those days. Come to think of it, you don’t see it today either.
