Back in the late 80s, Porsche figured out that there were people out there who would enjoy a melange between the kind of feeling you get by owning a 911 Cabriolet and the thrills provided by time spent on the circuit. As a result, Zuffenhaused came up with the 911 Speedster.
With the 930 Carrera series serving as a starting point, the Germans started off with a lightened open-top Neunelfer that saw customers signing an agreement informing them of the fact that the canvas top might not be entirely waterproof.
However, Porsche soon realized many people lust for a Speedster thanks to its custom and track-savvy looks, so they decided to refine the formula.
Basically, you can imagine a 911 Carrera Cabriolet with a custom cloth top covered by a double-hump fiberglass cover, with the car having lost its rear seats, as part of an extensive weight reduction program.
Now, the rendering we can see above, which comes from digital artist Rain Prisk, shows us what a 911 Speester touched by a restomod process would look like - we don't even dare to dream about an aftermarket specialist such as Singer coming up with one of these. While the original came in both standard and Turbo-style widebody versions, the one we see here is the uber-wide incarnation.
As for how the Speedster badge is translated into Porsche history pages that are closer to contemporary times, the current 991 generation still has a few years to wait until such a model can be released.
That's because the Speedster is one of those special edition the German automaker releases towards the end of a generation's life cycle. Unfortunately, the 997 Speedster wasn't nearly as special as the models from back in the day, missing the extreme windscreen and the serious weight reduction. So here's to hoping things will change in the future.
