1980 BMW M1 Totaled Back in 1985 Sold for More than $125,000

It’s a known fact that the value of BMW’s original supercar, the M1, has been on the rise, steadily, for the last couple of years. However, what we’re about to show you might be just a little too much.

The guys from Bring a Trailer found one of them for sale in Astoria, New York. The price tag was $125,000 which is extremely low for what the market value of such a car is today, so there had to be a catch.

Apparently, the car in question was totaled back in 1985 and has been kept locked away and preserved, only to be sold later. As you can see in the photos below, basically the whole car from the nose to the A-pillars is either missing or completely obliterated.

There’s no word on how this happened or if there were any casualties but from the looks of things, it didn’t end all that well for the driver and/or passenger. There are a couple of useful parts left on, probably including the engine but even so, paying that much for a totaled car must be a new record or something.

Most likely, the car will be used to restore another one as repairing this M1 seems rather impossible. Even if someone tried to do it, they’d need custom-made parts that will probably raise the price tag of such a job to incredible heights. Oh, not to mention that it probably wouldn’t be all that safe to drive around anyway.

That being said, we’re left with the spare parts status for this relic and, to be honest, some really hardcore BMW fan must’ve bought it for that amount of money. Just to remind you, the i8 costs $136,500, and that’s just shy of the price of this... half an M1.
