Way back in 1975, as the 59th Annual Indianapolis 500 race concluded, three very special GMC Sierra Grande pickups were manufactured and handed to people involved in the race, including the winning team’s (All American Racers) pit crew chief.
This particular Sierra was rebuilt by the crew from Squarebody Syndicate and presented during last year’s Indy 500. Now, it goes under the hammer during this January’s Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Officially, this particular GMC Sierra Grande is a tribute to both the world-famous race itself, but also to the team that propelled driver Bobby Unser to the win decades ago. In fact, under the hood of the truck there’s even an autograph from Unser himself, snatched by the builders during last year’s Indy.
Right next to the driver’s signature, the GMC sports a supercharged LS3 376ci V8 engine, customized and redesigned by Squarebody Syndicate. Under the body of the car sits a custom Roadster Shop chassis with AccuAir ENDO CVT suspension, and with RideTech adjustable shocks.
Known in the world of custom builds as Syndicate Series 02, the truck is both a nod to the past and an embodiment of present technologies.
The exterior is designed in the usual Squarebody style, with a slammed, low-riding square bodywork riding on turbine-style 20-inch billet wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The colors of the American flag proudly adorn the sides of the vehicle and the hood.
Inside, the seats and door trims are wrapped in rawhide leather that looks aged and worn. This look is contrasted by the modern feel of digital gauges, USB charging ports, full Bluetooth Kicker stereo, and air conditioning. Because the truck is a tribute to racing, there is even a roll cage fitted inside.
The 1976 GMC Sierra Grande Squarebody sells later this month with no reserve in Scottsdale. With it the builder also sells collector toy counterparts, and the framed original artwork (details in the photo gallery).
