"1974 Pontiac Firebird Restomod" Sports LS3 and Awesome Battleship Gray Paint

This Pontiac Firebird restomod gives us mixed feelings. However, it undeniably has a nice mix of the old with the new and could be perfect after just a little more tender love and care.

Mecum Auctions is listing this as lot F54 for the upcoming Indy 2020 event, scheduled for July 10-18. As we've already said, a few things bug us, but don't stop us from enjoying the car.

First of all, many muscle car fans might agree that this isn't a 1974 Pontiac Firebird. That model is supposed to have a little slant in the nose that is missing here. Pontiac rushed the second-generation model into production, and it was delayed until the early months of 1970, so we'd call this a 1970 and a half to a 1973 model.

Still, it's undeniably a cool-looking machine in this shade of "battleship gray," which really sells the restomod idea. The modern shade of gray looks a lot like Audi's Nardo Gray and reminds us of a widebody Firebird rendering we shared at the beginning of the month.

This theme continues with easy upgrades to spot, like a black rear bumper, Willow 4-wheel disc brakes, and staggered black wheels. Mecum's listing says these are Foose Nitrous wheels, but that's definitely not the case, since those have a classic 5-spoke design and are silver. No, the black alloys are more like a concave version of the Hellcat wheels.

The final little chink in this car's armor is the state of the body. The doors, front and rear fenders all have rippling, which suggests there might be some Bondo under there.

Thanks to a Katech LS3 swap sporty coupe delivers 560 hp (418 kW) to the wheels along with 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque via a four-speed automatic transmission. It's also got 3-inch straight pipes, so it should sound just as good as any modern Corvette.

Inside, you are greeted by Corbeau seats and all-black leather trim covering every surface imaginable. The Auto Meter instrument panel is framed in carbon, and the B&M gear stick joins the Budnik steering wheel to provide the necessary vibe.
