We had a crazy ride these past two month, as our journeys through the world of pickup trucks and the realm of Ford brought to light incredible machines from a time long gone. As fate would have it, because of their place in the custom world, most of these cars and trucks had at times huge price stickers attached. But not this F-100.
For the record, Ford’s half-ton from yesteryear is one of the most widespread items on the pre-owned and custom markets. So for one to sell for big bucks, something extraordinary must be accompanying it. Like say a powerful engine, a faithful restoration, or some crazy custom job. In some cases, having the truck in the possession of a single person for long stretches of time works too. But, again, not with this F-100.

Recently listed on Bring a Trailer, the truck went for peanuts earlier this week, despite having spent the last three decades in the hands of a single owner.

In terms of body custom work, the truck came to the auction pretty much in the same guise it had when it was made, in 1971, modernized with the help of two-tone green paint, 16.5-inch steel wheels, and chrome or aluminum trim here and there.

Inside, the F-100 shows a reupholstered bench in gray cloth, and a rather disappointing-looking dashboard.

The truck is not so original, mechanically speaking. Under the hood there’s a replacement 302ci (4.9-liter) V8 paired to a four-speed manual transmission, but also a new radiator, starter, and battery.

We’re not sure what drove the buyer to go for this truck, but chances are we’ll get to see it, probably not long from now, getting back on the market in a much different shape. And given how just $8,500 went into it, we reckon there should be enough money left to invest in a really astounding build.
