Back in the late 1950s, Ford and GM found a new niche to battle upon - the 2-door coupe utility segment. It all started with the Custom-based Ford Ranchero in 1957 and it became a full-size duel when GM introduced the Chevrolet El Camino.
They’re quite popular today, especially those muscly 1970s Chevelle-based El Caminos and, if we may add, we wouldn’t say no to a 1967 Ford Fairlane-based Ranchero. But how about an European 2-door coupe utility? We know company like Austin, Morris and Peugeot did some back in the day, but how about a German one? And not just any German vehicle, but a 1971 BMW 1600-2.
Yes folks, someone actually chopped a classic “New Class” BMW into a pickup that’ll be very popular in the United States and Australia. As a matter of fact, this Bavarian Ute is actually listed for sale in San Francisco and can be had for only $14,700. Not bad for an unique vehicle, eh?
Modified by “a local BMW expert”, the 1600 pickup has received a more powerful six-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with a five-speed manual gearbox. Other enhancements include unnamed Jaguar brakes, BMW E36 M3 seats, Bilstein suspension and bespoke wood trim.
