Mecum’s “The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction” is currently taking place in Kissimmee, and soon we’ll be able to share some of the spectacular highlights that surpassed expectations. Thanks to our Ford Month feature, the seemingly never-ending periplus in search of the next great Blue Oval has now taken us to a very interesting representative.
It's an integral part of the Steve Todhunter Collection that’s going to hit the red carpet at the company's Glendale event in March. And when we say an appealing member, we literally mean that.
Checking out the collection's roster for Mecum’s upcoming auction reveals it's chock-full of red cars – many of them of the Prancing Horse variety. Granted, we spotted some oddities among them, but those will have to wait their turn to share the story.
On this occasion, our eye was caught by a Grabber Blue Ford Mustang Boss 429 from 1970; we almost skipped a beat for another one in Grabber Green before realizing the blue one you see in the photos isn’t the same example that sold for $225,500 back in October during Mecum’s Dallas event. It’s as close as it gets, though, because that unit was KK no. 2399 and the one we’re interested in today has the KK number of 2401!
Better yet, this Grabber Blue is also one of the lowest-mileage Mustang Boss 429 units we have come across recently, with just 7,745 miles (12,464 km) on the odometer. With that figure, it's almost on par with the Candy Apple Red example from 1969 that’s currently on sale from a dealer lot for the nice lump sum of $286k.
As such, we could venture into coming up with our own estimate – something in the ballpark of $250k is most likely a safe appraisal. That’s because the low-mileage Boss 429 is also a restored collectible as the recipient of professional work done at Randal's Restorations, Inc., and with details finished by none other than Bob Perkins, the Mustang Club of America (MCA) Authenticity head judge.
With this seal of approval, does anything else matter? Probably not, but let’s remind us why these classic Mustangs are so craved. The massive hood scoop is a great hint towards 429 cubic inches (7.0 liters) of V8 wonder, while the four-speed Hurst-shifter transmission and the factory Drag Pack neatly seal the deal.
