1968 Ford Mustang Bullitt Owner Uses Cutter to Chip Away Paint from the Car

Back in November, the current owner of the 1968 Ford Mustang Bullitt, the star of the movie by the same name, announced the launch of a one-off timepiece called the Bullitt 50 Chronograph. Among other things, the watch features about one gram of paint from the original Mustang Bullitt.

When first hearing about this, our initial thought was that the owners found the color code for the paint used on the car, or tracked down the last can of dye used for it, or that at least the process of taking actual samples from the actual car was a bit more sophisticated than just cutting away at it with sharp objects.

How wrong were we! Sean Kiernan, the current owner of the car, is shown in a video published this week actually using a sharp tool to literally scrape away a couple of pieces of paint from the rear end of the Bullitt.

Now, we know this is for a good cause, as the money raised from selling raffle tickets will go to Drive Toward a Cure, an organization which fights Parkinson’s disease. But really, there must have been some other way to get that paint off of the car!

Aside from seeing Kiernan cut away at the Mustang’s skin, we also get a closeup of the rear end of the car, without all the Photoshop makeup used in official photos. And by the looks of it, the car is in a very dire state: the paint is gone here and there, letting loose all the underneath rust.

2018 was the car’s 50th anniversary. We would have like to see it restored a bit this year, instead of being shipped all across the U.S. and even across the ocean for show and tell purposes.

After all, this is the car that inspired generations of movie and car lovers. The one of two GT fastbacks used in the Bullit movie starring Steve McQueen.
