There’s nothing like a car auction to bring out into the open all of the best car builds that otherwise would have remained unknown to the general public. After all, if it weren’t for such events, how would we have ever found out about this Chevelle?
Earlier this month, auction house Barrett-Jackson completed one of its biggest online auctions ever, conducted over the Internet partly on account of the ongoing health crisis. A large collection of cars exchanged hands this way in May, selling for a combined total that is close to $4 million.
Among the high-value vehicles sold during the auction is this 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle, part of a family that has been in production for just a little over a decade. It inspired both muscle car fans of the time and the custom builder closer to the current era.
This particular car gained its present form in 2012, at the end of a rebuild process that also called for a major engine tune. Wearing the proper hardware to make it a Pro-Touring machine - 9-inch differential, tubular control arms, trailing arm, heavy-duty sway bars, and power disc brakes all around – it also sports a powerplant of massive proportions.
With a displacement of 434ci (7.1 liter)s, the stroked V8 is a monster that hides under the hood with an output of 560 hp and 590 ft/lbs (800 Nm) of torque, properly measured on the dyno.
The great exterior look and the imposing heart are accompanied by a carefully crafted interior, sporting Mercedes-Benz wool carpet all around, leather seats, and a chromed dashboard that reveals special gauges.
This particular Chevelle was one of the high earners of the said Barrett-Jackson auction. The new owner paid $78,100 for it, and received a car with just 300 miles on the odometer, but also the dyno sheets and flow charts that testify to the claimed output.
