Custom garages and tuners are a dime a dozen, which means the competition in this segment is fierce. That’s why prize like the Ridler Award gives a build an extra edge, and a touch of notoriety.
At the 2019 Autorama, the said award went to a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham with a Pininfarina body, turned into a wagon thanks to nip’n'tucks here and there, and the fitting of a roof sourced from a Chevrolet Nomad.

The build belongs to a now-deceased custom car builder by the name of Stephen Barton and started life as one of 99 Cadillac Eldorado built back in 1959 with a Pininfarina body. Dubbed CadMad, the car is nothing like its source.

Ten people worked over 4,000 hours chopping, sectioning, and dipping in acid the body of the car before attaching the roof of the Nomad and turning it into a slammed, salmon-pink station wagon.

The resulting car is 18 inches shorter than the original, and lost 4 inches in width as well. The factory-built four doors now make way to only two, which seem dwarfed by the very long rear panels.

The builders kept elements like the original flying hood ornament, head and tail lamps, bumpers, grille, side spears, wheel treatments and steering wheel, all subtly modified to become part of the new build.

The interior is leather-wrapped, including the retro-looking Recaro bucket seats taken off a 2012 Cadillac CTS-V, while EVOD provided the instrument bezel. The instrument gauges, with their classic look, seem to fit right in the brownish décor.

Under the elongated hood sits a Nelson Racing-tuned 632ci big-block Chevrolet V8 engine that runs on racing fuel. Paired to an automatic transmission and a C5 Corvette-sourced transaxle, the car develops 1,025 hp and 950 lb-ft of torque.

The award-winning 1959 Cadillac Eldorado is now up for grabs, as it will go under the hammer at the 2020 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction in January 2020.
