1952 Fiat F1 Hauler Headed to Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Leading up to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion brings some of the most priceless pieces of automotive racing history together for a weekend of classic car racing. This year, one vehicle in particular won’t be participating in the racing, but it has just as much provenance as any car out on the track.

From 1953 through 1957, Maserati used the exact 1952 Fiat 642 transporter shown above to haul a pair of Maserati 250F Formula One racecars and a seven-man crew across Europe. The cars were driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jean Behra. According to the press release, this transporter was sold off by Maserati in 1957, and it ended up wasting away until 2002 where it was bought at auction and eventually restored back to its original glory by Lawrence Auriana.

Perhaps the best part of this story is how the Fiat will make it to Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Just like it did through most of the 1950s, the transporter will be driven from its home in Stamford, CT to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The journey began on August 1 and it is expected to end when the big Fiat rolls into the racetrack tomorrow where it will remain through the race weekend (August 14-17) as part of the Maserati heritage display.

I am sure the sight of this enormous transporter barreling down the road has caused more than a few heads to turn,” said Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “These types of vehicles add to the overall enjoyment and history to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and we are grateful to Lawrence Auriana for sharing his automotive treasures with our participants and racing fans.”

In addition to sending the Fiat transporter, its owner will also have other vintage Maserati on display, both racecars and passenger cars.
