A name common only for the diehard vintage bike enthusiast, Marcel Giuguet is the grandfather of such motorcycle fame designs such as the Yamaha Deltabox, and one of the very few remaining bikes made by him will go under the hammer in February 2014.
Bonhams will auction an 1920 MGC N3 bike with original paint on February 6th at the Grand Palais sale in Paris during Retromobile week. This is one of the estimated 56 MGC machines remaining around the world, so we're looking at a very rare piece of bike history and technology.

Giuguet was a visionary and he dreamed of making the bikes lighter and stiffer, by using cast aluminium frame parts, and incorporating the fuel and the oil tank into the build.

The MGC N3 is powered by a 350cc JAP engine with dual exhausts, mated to a 3-speed gearbox. The instruments are loaded atop of the 11-liter fuel tank and the lowered handlebars are a good indication of this bike's sporty nature.

The revolutionary design of the Marcel Giuguet et Cie (MGC) bikes was however plagued by the poor aliminium casting techniques in the early 20th century, and the porosity of the cast elements often caused problems.

Most often the MGC bikes had leaky tanks which needed a varnish sealant, and cracks in the frame, which lead many owners to simply scrap the motorcycles to recover the valuable aluminium, this being the cause of their actual small numbers.

Little known as he is, Marcel Giuguet must be remembered as one of the pioneers of modern-design frames.
