161,000 Dodge Calibers Under Investigation for Sticky Accelerator Pedals

The sticky accelerator pedal problem seems to affect other automakers as well, not only Toyota. Chrysler Group accelerator pedals made by the same company that supplied Toyota Motor Corporation are under investigation by U.S. automotive-safety regulators for potential cases of sticking in Dodge Caliber models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted on its web site today an announcement that it is looking into the pedals made by CTS Corporation for Chrysler’s 2007 model year Dodge Caliber, which includes about 161,000 vehicles. The NHTSA said it received five complaints by consumers saying the pedals stuck while they were driving their vehicles.

CTS, based in Elkhart, Indiana, also supplies pedals to Honda Motor Company, Nissan Motor Company and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, according to the company’s chief executive officer. No crashes or injuries have been attributed to the defect, NHTSA said.

It appears to be a supplier manufacturing concern, which is mechanical in nature and not a design or electronic issue. Additionally, the Dodge Caliber is equipped with a brake override system. If a disagreement occurs between the throttle and the brake, the engine controller will reduce power, allowing the operator to stop the car,” states Chrysler in a press release.

Chrysler adds in the statement that the problem is limited to a small number of vehicles built during a five-week period between March and April of 2006. The automaker says it will cooperate fully with the investigation.

Customers who own a 2007 model year Dodge Caliber built during the time of March through April of 2006 may visit their local Dodge dealer for a free accelerator pedal inspection”, Chrysler’s statement adds. There has been no recall of the vehicles so far.
