16-Year-Old with No Driving License Crashes Mum’s Car on the Nurburgring

The touristenfahrten days on the famous Nürburgring track are over - whoa, put down your pitchforks and allow me to finish the sentence - they’re over until next year. Is that better? No? Well, alright, to the funeral pyre we march, then.

Anyway, last Sunday - November 15, that is - was the last day of 2015 when driving on the Green Hell was open to the public. Predictably, that meant that the place was even more crowded than usual, with cars filling up the parking lot before doing their best to get in the way of faster drivers on the actual track.

Nothing new, then, it was just the density that was abnormal. There were people from all over Europe, including the UK, Finland, Spain and, very important to our story, Switzerland.

One unusual couple made up of a mother and her son showed up at the gates of Nürburgring in their silver Chrysler Crossfire ready to have some fun on the track. The thing is, they had plenty of fun getting there too, as the speeding ticket they got will clearly prove. The duo was caught doing 215 km/h (135 mph) in a 130 km/h (80 mph) zone, which translates to a €1,260 ($1,343) fine and a possible three-month driving ban on German roads. So their little trip was proving quite expensive already. But the best was yet to come.

Once their destination was reached, with the mother’s need for speed already taken care of, it was the son’s turn. He climbed aboard the car and set about to do a few laps of the Nordschleife, which to be quite honest we find a little frightening. If there’s nobody there to check who’s driving the cars or if they even have a license, what’s stopping the Nürburgring track from becoming a learning ground for all pre-18 teens?

Anyway, as the video below suggests (he comes in at the 1:12 mark), the boy wasn’t actually all that bad, and was certainly not afraid to use the throttle pedal. Helped by the lower weight of having his mother wait for him in the car park, our unnamed F1 driver wannabe tore down the straights and didn’t seem to mind getting up close and personal with the other drivers.

As fate has it, he ultimately got up close and personal with the protective barriers, crashing his car and adding the repair bill to the already costly holiday, not to mention the plane or train tickets back home. Unfortunately, the crash itself was not caught on video.

Moral of the story? If karma is sending you messages, make sure you’re paying attention and stop after the first one. Also, don’t be that kind of a parent everybody hates for raising a spoiled brat. Try to say “no” every once in a while.
