A 15-year-old schoolboy and little-known daredevil from Ukraine died trying a stunt that, he had hoped, would earn him more online followers: jumping from a 14-story building with a homemade parachute.
Perhaps more shocking than the news that a teenager would try such a dangerous stunt without using proper equipment is the fact that adults not only allowed him to – but stood by and watched as he did it, cheering him on, The Sun informs, citing reports in the local media.
Bogdan Firsov’s social media feeds show that he was a daredevil: he would often photograph himself standing on the top of high buildings, so he probably thought doing this jump would take him one step further in terms of online popularity. The report doesn’t say who made the parachute for him or how it had been made, but it does note that it wasn’t proper equipment for this kind of stunt.
The height wasn’t right either: at 14 stories, the abandoned building in the city of Makiivka is only 140 feet tall. According to the publication, he would have needed at least 25 stories to have enough time for the parachute to open. Assuming he had used a proper parachute, that is.
As things stood, he jumped to his death. He landed on his back, on some “padding” that had been lain out and that ultimately proved absolutely useless, and was killed on the spot.
As he posed atop the building, waving at the crowd, his mother and other relatives were down, cheering him on. Clearly, no one ever stopped to consider the possibility that this might not work.
“A crowd of people was there and nobody tried to stop him. They only filmed,” an unnamed eyewitness says. “People are not human any longer, they have lost all common sense. It happened right in front of my eyes. The boy jumped down with a parachute. He flew down and hit the ground with his back. It was really tough.”
According to local reports, this is the third teenager to die this year by jumping from this abandoned building.
