What better way to show appreciation than by personally delivering a sweet treat in an equally sweet ride? That’s the thinking behind young racer Gray Leadbetter’s most recent campaign.
The campaign sees her partnering with a local filmmaker and the only donut shop in Lexington, North Carolina, to deliver the sweet confections to first-responders, as a thank-you for their hard work and commitment during these troubled times. And because nothing goes better with donuts than a cup of black coffee more donuts, she did some of those too – the zero-calorie, smoky, rubber-burning variant.

A couple of months ago, Leadbetter, who is signed with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and trains with former Indy 500 Champion Buddy Rice, took part in the online Donut Challenge, with her Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi Scat Pack. The challenge is all about eating donuts while doing donuts, and came with an admission on her part that this was the first time she ever did donuts on a public road (she was in a closed parking lot, but still).

Leadbetter is only 15 years old and has a learner’s permit, which makes her recent gesture all the more amazing. She and the same local filmmaker she used for the Challenge stopped by the Lexington Police Department, the Davidson County Sheriff, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and the Novant Health facility in Lexington, to deliver the sweet treats. She didn’t do any donuts there, in the presence of law enforcement, but rather on the way, as the video below shows.

“We took the necessary precautions to make safe deliveries and practice social distancing, and I have to admit, balancing a full box of donuts on a huge spatula and extending it six feet is way harder than it looks,” she wrote in a caption to the video. “Happy to report I only dropped a couple, and had a ton of fun in the process.”

She also carried a “Honk for donuts” sign, which made the experience fun for passers-by as well, since they too got free donuts.
