Firefighters in Denver, Colorado, were welcomed by a very unusual sight when they responded to a call of a man passed out at the wheel of his (parked) vehicle: a giant snake.
The good news is that the driver hadn’t been killed by the snake, he was just dead drunk. The snake was his pet and it had managed to slither out of the vehicle, perhaps thinking now was a good time to make a run for it, when master was asleep.

All jokes aside, authorities are using this rather rare incident as a warning for all drivers: be smart and don’t drink and drive. If you also happen to be transporting unusual pets, this is all the more reason to stay sober.

“More animal adventures this weekend for the DFD, this time the reptile type,” the Denver Fire Department writes on Twitter, in post accompanying 2 photos of the giant snake, as it’s about to make its escape and with one of the firefighters.

“Engine #29 found a party passed out in his car, while his 15ft. snake was crawling out of the driver's side window on to the roof! Don't drink & drive, especially with your pet snake in the car! #BeSmart,” the caption further reads.

DFD says that there was also a dog in the car but it, unlike the treacherous snake, stayed put. That’s why they call dogs (and not snakes) man’s best friend.

The Department doesn’t say whether both pets were being transported in safe conditions, but let’s use this example to remind you that, in addition to not drinking and driving, you should always take proper care of your pets. Use special carriers or cages for all pets, and secure them with the seatbelt.

Because so many people love to drive around with their dogs, specially-made dog seatbelts are available online, so look into that as well, before you hit the road.
