14-Year Olds Can Now Drive a Renault Twizy 45 EV

Oh, to be young and want to impress girls with you car. I can remember when I was 14 years old and dreamed of one day owning a Renault Clio RS with a big 2-liter lump. Fortunately, in 2015 there is a Renault that you can drive at that tender age.

France has adopted a new European directive, under which the law regarding light quadricycles has changed. 14-year olds with a BSB road safety certificate can drive the Twizy 45 that’s usually reserved for those 16 or older. This also applies in Italy, Spain and if they have a moped license in Germany, Austria or Finland.

There are some advantages to the Renault over a scooter. For starters, you can more easily convince your parents to buy one, since it has an airbag, double seatbelts, disc brakes and a protective cell. It can also teach you what it’s like to drive a car, which is more than we can say about a scooter.

Sure, it’s got a limited top speed and isn’t as fun to drive or look at as the Clio RS, but it’s the only Renault with Lamborghini doors. That’s got to count for something, right? Just think of all the cool pictures you'll be able to post on Instagram!

Essentially, the Twizy 45 is like the entry-level model that starts at €6,990 in Europe with a monthly battery lease charge of €50. The power output is limited to 4 hp, unlike the 17 hp of a regular model, while its top speed is 45 km/h (28 mph). The 45 takes 9.9 seconds to reach its maximum speed, whereas the full Twizy will get there in just 6.1 seconds.
